Excel is a powerful tool for containing and analyzing data. Whether a few cells or multiple sheets within a workbook, Excel works for simple calculations, tracking information and much more. Cells that contain data like numbers, text, or even formulas can be grouped and then added, sorted, filtered, formatted and more!

This basics session is geared towards teachers that are beginning to use Microsoft Excel or staff that would like more information related to functions, conditional formatting, and how to create and use simple formulas.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Creating a new workbook
  • layout and terms used
  • Entering data
  • Apply borders and cell shading
  • Using Autosum
  • Creating simple formulas
  • Applying a number text or other format
  • Placing data in a table
  • Using Quick Analysis including totals and charts
  • Sort and filtering data
  • Saving options
  • Print areas and printing work
  • Find and apply templates
  • and other topics as time allows.

This title may also be requested as part of a series where the next session would be scheduled at an intermediate level.


  • Participants must have basic computer skills and a valid email address
  • Participants must have access to Microsoft Excel (Win16 or higher).


OTAN Certificates of Attendance are awarded only for workshop sessions to those that are pre-registered and attend at least 75% of the scheduled time.
