Description This blended (online and in person) CoP incorporates both collaborative work (online in Moodle) and two live sessions (3-hour online workshop). This module provides examples of integrating transferable work skills and contextualizing workplace forms and activities into general English as a second language (ESL) class instruction. The purpose is to provide background to educators for teaching skills transferable from the classroom to the workplace and to explicitly teach students how to articulate those skills. Session 1 emphasizes the need to directly teach transferable skills and the connection between using these skills in the classroom and in the workplace. This community of practice begins on Oct. 31, 2022, and ends on Dec. 13, 2022, with in-person sessions on Nov. 15 and Nov. 29.

Facilitator The goal of Session 1 is to provide background on skills transferable from the ESL classroom to the workplace and to explicitly teach students how to articulate those skills. Session 1 emphasizes the need to directly teach transferable skills and the connection between using these skills in the classroom and in the workplace. With an overview and comparison of three frameworks (Employability Skills Framework, Foundation Skills Framework, and Transitions Integration Framework), Session 1 provides participants an opportunity to reflect on the practice and importance of teaching transferable skills in the classroom.

The goal of Session 2 is to provide hands-on application of transferable skills that can be taught in the classroom and transferred to the workplace. By the end of Session 2, participants will be able to: identify integrated instruction in the context of the workplace and the benefits of implementation; describe instructional strategies for teaching self-evaluation in the context of the classroom and at work; describe instructional strategies for teaching problem-solving in the context of job scenarios; and select materials to integrate transferable skills using authentic documents and textbooks.
